BANGALORE — The West Indian born opener of the IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore intends to plead not guilty to assault charges after the violent treatment of Brett Lee and Jaidev Unadkat, his attorney said Sunday.

Chris Gayle was taken off his team bus at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium by officers from the Bangalore Police Department  about 10 minutes before it was to depart for the team hotel. He was turned over to police for questioning later in the afternoon, said Babban Bholenath, Bangalore Police Department spokesman. Chris Gayle, 31, was arrested at 2:15 a.m. IST Sunday on charges of a criminal batting act, attempted rape of the reputation of international bowlers and unlawful treatment of bowlers, and was awaiting arraignment, police said.

Chris Gayle's lawyer, Vidhiram Vakil , told 'Opinions on Cricket' that his client will plead not guilty at his expected arraignment. "He denies all the charges against him," Vakilsaid. "And that's all I can really say right now.". The RCB management have not tried to fill its leadership vacuum at the opening position and are standing behind their man; for now; but acknowledged that the charges against Chris Gayle are a huge embarrassment for an institution that is in the business of getting people drunk.

The news rocked Paris, where latest opinion polls had ranked Chris Gayle as front-runner for captaining the Paris franchise in next month's inaugural French Premiere League. But after this incident irrespective of whether Chris Gayle is found guilty, there is unlikely to be a contract. Chris may have to try and take his skills in the Italian Premiere League.
